Recommended Toothbrush

Monday, December 1st, 2008

We get asked a lot about our recommendation for toothbrushs…so here’s a few things to consider:

Doctor definately likes the power toothbrush that helps patients get the job done better!  Sonicare is a great toothbrush and the technology of “sonic” brushing has really advanced the industry and the public’s understanding of what their process involves. (Better health of teeth and gums!)  Here are a few website links you can click for product information and possible discounts that are currently available.

So, while there are LOTS of choices out there – all ranging in “features” and price – just be sure that the brushing is getting done after eating and you’ll increase the health and well being of your teeth!

In addition to your brushing – Doctor DOES recommend the Waterpik.  This is an additional tool that helps patients to get between the teeth, under the braces and into the gumline for improved cleanliness.  (This is an especially good product if you dislike the idea of “flossing” or have excessive bleeding when you floss.)

Dental Check-Ups

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

All necessary dentistry must be completed prior to starting orthodontic therapy. It is essential that the patient maintain regular six-month appointments with their general dentist for exam and cleanings during the orthodontic treatment period.

Periodontal Problems

Swollen, inflamed and bleeding gums can usually be prevented by proper and regular flossing and brushing. Periodontal (gum) disease can be caused by accumulation of plaque and debris around the teeth and gums. But there are also several unknown causes that can lead to progressive loss of supporting bone around the teeth and recession of the gums. Should the condition become uncontrollable, orthodontic treatment may have to be discontinued before completion. This would be rare. Monthly orthodontic visits are not a substitute for a regular six month dental exams. A Waterpik / Sonicare product must be used during treatment.

Decalcification

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

“Tooth discoloration” may result. Oral Hygiene must be maintained and just good hygiene may not be enough – we encourage you to have EXCELLENT Oral Hygiene. Poor hygiene may result in cavities, decalcification, discolored teeth and / or gum disease. Avoiding hard and sticky foods will help keep bands and brackets from loosening. Calling our office to report any loose bands as soon as they are noticed will help minimize decay and gum problems. It is important to brush the teeth and gums immediately after eating. This will help prevent decalcifications, resulting in the white, soft enamel areas that can become decayed. Routine visits for cleaning and topical fluoride treatments are an important part of your child’s treatment.

Brushing

It’s more important than ever to brush and floss regularly when you have braces, so the teeth and gums are healthy after orthodontic treatment. Patients who do not keep their teeth clean may require more frequent visits to the dentist for a professional cleaning. Adults who have a history of gum disease should also see a periodontist during orthodontic treatment.
At each of your appointments, Doctor will be doing an Oral Hygiene Check – if you need to improve in this area a letter may be sent home with you to remind you how important Brushing is to the success of your treatment.  Continued Poor Oral Hygiene can result in the termination of your treatment.
After your treatment is complete – Brushing will be just as important as you will want to SMILE more to show off those “straight” teeth.  The benefit to life after braces is that those who previously had difficulties in getting between crooked teeth will now find brushing and keeping areas clean easier after their orthodontic treatment.
